Children and Family Ministries
Welcome! We're glad you're here! At Hillsboro United Methodist Church (HUMC) we are excited about families - all kinds of families! We believe the family is the foundation of faith and are committed to helping those who participate in this community to grow in faith. We are here not only to serve you but to encourage and equip you to participate fully in the life of the church and, most particularly, in the vital and exciting work of Family Ministries.
At HUMC we are a church committed to:faith formation, exploration and growth.

faith formation, exploration and growth. We believe Sunday mornings are all about growing our faith in challenging, engaging and interesting ways -- and that they can be so much more! They are a time to build community, making friends and exploring how our talents and skills can be put to use to support and enhance God's kingdom. They are a time of conversation, service and prayer - a place for sharing our stories and for learning to listen to stories of others. They are a balance of the many facets that help us to form and grow our faith and build our community.
a truly intergenerational community. In many places in the church you will see children and adults working, worshiping, learning and celebrating together in community. We believe children learn and grow best in the midst of a multi-generational community.
a "Team" approach to Family Ministries. Christine Webb, our Family Ministries coordinator, leads a team of skilled and passionate volunteers who are committed to providing fun, inspiring and faith-filled programs, activities and classes for our members. Classes include small group Sunday school classes, Lift Off! and several Adult Small Groups on Sunday mornings. Activities are varied and evolve from year to year but include Summer JAM (our multi-generational vacation Bible School) Christmas caroling, service projects, participation in Worship services, Youth Book Club, and Parents' Night Out. We also have a Youth Team, under the guidance of Kevin Love, that plans programs for youth grades 6 through 12.
care and safety of our youngest participants. Children are welcomed fully into the life of the church at HUMC, including worship. We do have a beautiful Nursery Ministry with professional nursery care available for the entirety of our Sunday morning program, and most other times we gather. Children ages three and younger are welcomed into the Nursery at any time. All Nursery personnel are trained in, and committed to, our Safe Sanctuary policy. Precautions are taken to assure the well-being and safety of every child cared we care for. Parents who desire information about baptism should check with Pastor Clay for information.
helping children ages three through grade five grow in faith, develop friendships, and feel welcomed in our church community. Sunday morning experiences include the 9AM Morning JAM intergenerational class and Lift Off!, which is an optional class that meets during the latter 2/3 of the worship service. Children are also welcomed to the Youth Book Club and to Parents' Night Out fun and games. Our third graders are presented with Bibles each year and Pastor Gwen works with Scouts on P.R.A.Y. activities. Children are invited to participate in Worship as greeters, ushers and acolytes. Special bulletins are provided each Sunday that help young children relate to the Worship theme and scripture. There is also a Children's Library on the stage at the end of the Fellowship Hall where children often gather after service for social time, game playing and book-choosing.
classes, programs and activities for our youth. We have a special Youth Team that works with Pastor Gwen to plan and execute outings, service projects and activities for our youth. There is a special Sunday Small Study Group, under the direction Mary Foote, just for youth each week at 9AM. Our youth participate in a cooperative youth group with other churches each month and also in HUMY, a Methodist youth group that meets primarily for excursions and volunteer work. The coop group is planning to participate in a summer service project in the summer of 2011. The youth also participate in Youth Book Club on the third Friday of each month.
working with parents and grandparents to provide support, encouragement and education. We believe the family, in all its wonderful and unique variations, is the cradle from which faith development begins. We acknowledge the busy and active lives of parents and offer support and encouragement wherever it is possible. There is a parenting lending library on the lower level in the Rainbow Café. We offer parenting classes and there is a free Parents' Night Out on the third Friday of each month. Parents are invited to participate in the intergenerational Morning JAM class with their children and many of our activities are family-friendly and sibling/parent inclusive.
support and encouragement of volunteers. We couldn't offer the programs and activities that are so much a part of the life of our congregation without our passionate and committed volunteers. We utilize volunteers in the following areas: Shepherding (being a second person in a classroom to meet our Safe Sanctuary requirements), helping with the Youth Group, helping with Summer JAM, teaching Morning JAM and Lift Off!, and helping with the various festivals and gatherings we have during the year (Advent Festival, Parents' Night Out, Lenten Gathering) and other activities throughout the year. If you would like to volunteer in the Family Ministry area please contact Christine Webb.
sacredness and safety of all who venture through our doors. Our Safe Sanctuary Policy is a policy we take seriously, doing our best to create and maintain an environment that is safe for both children and vulnerable adults. Anyone working with children or driving our bus is required to attend Safe Sanctuary training and to pass a background check. If you would like to receive Safe Sanctuary training please contact Christine Webb.
