Child Education Ministries
We value children of all ages at Hillsboro United Methodist Church. We want you to feel comfortable with our programs and decide to have your child attend regularly. While your child is in class you might choose to participate in one of several options available for adult learning as well. Hillsboro U.M.C. is a place to learn and grow together.
If you have specific questions please feel free to contact our Sunday School Superintendent, Marci Petrick, at 503-648-5244.
Children's Ministry
-
Children’s Ministry at Hillsboro has something for every age of child. We strive to create a safe place where children can come to learn and create friendships with other children. Our goal is to make learning about the Bible and growing in faith a fun and educational experience that will engage each and every child. Our leaders work in teams and spend time in weekly preparation for each class. Each teacher has passed a statewide background check.
Nursery Care
-
Our professionally staffed nursery is open to families with infants and toddlers during all worship services, Sunday school and many meetings. The nursery has changing tables, rocking chairs, a toddler bathroom, and many age-appropriate toys for little ones to enjoy. With the aid of youth assistance, our nursery maintains a very low adult/child ratio.
Children’s Church
-
Children are invited to be with their families during the first part of worship. There they can participate in congregational singing and prayer time. Children ages 3-7 may leave the worship service after the pastor’s Children’s Story Time. They are met by adult leaders in a classroom where they enjoy a Bible story, crafts, video, or age-appropriate activities.
Sunday School
-
Church School for all ages is from 9:00- 10:00. Children and youth are grouped by age. Adult classes cover a variety of subjects and interests and usually change every 6 weeks or so. You are welcome to join a class at any time.
3 & 4 year olds (Exploring Faith)
-
The 3 & 4 year olds meet in their own classroom at 9:00. They use a pre-school Exploring Faith curriculum from Cokesbury to learn about God’s love. They enjoy Bible stories, arts and crafts, and creative play time.
The Kinders through 6th graders (Opening Time)
-
The Kinders through 6th graders all gather together at 9:00 for “Opening Time”. They sing, welcome visitors, celebrate birthdays, be mission-minded, share prayer concerns, and take offering. Then each age group will be accompanied by a “shepherd” who travels with the children to experience a new station. Because we all learn in different ways, we have converted our traditional classrooms into colorful unique stations. In our “rotational” setting, the same Bible story or theme is taught for 4 weeks. Each week our “Faith Explorers” rotate to a different station. The story or theme remains the same, but children encounter it in different ways in each station. In Joyful Noise the children play handbells, and enjoy movement games along with the story. In Creation Station the theme is carried out in arts and crafts and banner-making. In the Parable Theater they practice drama and storytelling. The Rainbow Café is hands-on cooking and science that pertain to the story. The more different ways children explore a story or concept, the more it is reinforced in their memory.
Middle School & High School Youth
-
The youth meet for church school in the new upstairs youth arcade. They all meet together and enjoy a variety of thought-provoking faith-based topics that make for lively discussion.
