Mid-week Educational Studies

Sharing the Journey
Dear Friend on the Journey,
With the encouragement of Beth and Joyce, I am announcing the beginning of a new men’s program at Hillsboro UMC.
Sharing the Journey
A Conversation about Being A Man and Our Journey in God
Thursday, January 26, 2006
5:30-7:00 PM
Our guide and companion on the journey will be audiotapes and the writings of Rev. Richard Rohr, a Franciscan priest who has spent many years exploring what it means to be a man, We will be taking a look at some of the classic male archetypes- hero, warrior, magician, lover- and discuss what we can learn from these archetypes as we find them in the Christ and our own life journey.

We will be meeting once each month until summer. At that time we will decide whether the group will continue and what direction we shall take.

Without debating its value, the announcement of a “ Men’s Bible Study “ self-selects those men in a local parish who will participate. It is my hope that this group will appeal to a much wider cross-section of men in our congregation.

If you have any questions, please feel free to give me a call at 503-359-3597. I will hope to see you in the “ Arcade “ at church on the 26th.
Shalom,
Lorenz “ Lefty “ Schultz

Women's Evening Fellowship
Womenąs Evening Fellowship meets the second and fourth Monday of each month at the home of Susan Jensen. Our purposes are to respond to cares, concerns and joys of the congregation through a ministry of cards, as well as to grow personally through fellowship and study. This is a łno-prep˛ study group. Please contact Susan Jensen, 503-648-3040, to learn more about WEF.

Prayer Group
As the New Year begins it is a good time to put something important in place, to root it so that it begins to have a life of its own fed by the Holy Spirit, guided and sustained by hungry souls. We will again meet once a week to sit in prayer and reflection for an hour.

We as a people of faith we are so good at doing, at giving our time for others.

And there is another way to serve that is to just sit in prayer, to just be, to let God work in and through us. I love Thomas Keating’s words “This is the God that is manifesting who he is at every moment, in and through us and through all creation. Jesus’ teaching initiates us into how to take part in this cosmic adventure.”

This prayer time will give us an experience of silence, of listening to God in the depth of our being. It will be a time to pray for each other, for our church, for our country, and for the world. In this time of listening we may be changed just because we showed up and waited, listened, believed.

As part of out time together we shall also be using Lectio Divina for reading scripture.

This is what my sister-in-law Pat wrote on discovering Lectio recently. She researched it on www.valyermo.com You may want to do the same.

“The explanation of Lectio Divina was beautiful and it went right to my heart. Now my understanding has widened and it all seems to fall into place - the contemplation along with centering prayer.”

THE ANCIENT ART OF LECTIO DIVINA: IS ACCEPTING THE EMBRACE OF GOD……Are you ready for this embrace? I know I am!!!!!!

When: Starting Every Monday 12.30 – 1.30pm
Where: At church, upstairs room.
You may not be able to come every week and yet know you have a longing in your heart for this. Come as you can, this group is open to all, men women, youth and children
If you would be interested in attending a prayer group at another time and day let us know.
For more information call, (Rev. Barbara Schultz (503) 359-3597) or speak to me after Sunday Morning Service

Men's Bible Study

Women's Bible Study
The Women’s Bible Study is held on Thursday morning from 9-10:0 AM. We meet at Glaydis Basinger's home on 409 NE Birchwood Terrace. We are a non-denominational group of retired women who enjoy prayer, study and fellowship.
We are in the Genesis to Revelation series and will be starting Joshua on January 12. The first half hour is spent telling who needs our prayers. Then we have the lesson with our study books and Bibles. For more information contact Eleanor Mills at 503-648-6139

Women of Faith Bible Study Group
Women of Faith Bible Study Group meets on Thursday mornings from 8:30-10:00 in the Arcade* the upstairs gathering room at the church. We share the leadership (but no one has to lead a week if they are not comfortable) and usually choose something that requires daily reading or at least some preparation before the class. We have done Disciple, Companions, and other shorter studies.

Our current study is “Sisters Bible Study for Women”. It is divided into 4 different 6-week sessions. We will be starting with "A Mile in Her Shoes: Lessons from the lives of Old Testament women". Our first meeting will be Jan 12. All women are invited to join us at any time. We do not offer child care. Contact Linda Clarkson for more information.
