Lincoln Street Elementary Food Backpacks

Since the spring of 2009, we have provided backpacks filled with nutritious, kid-friendly food to needy families at Lincoln Street Elementary School, our neighbor across the street. Last year, Lincoln Street was designated as one of two schools in the Hillsboro district where everyone was eligible to receive free lunch because so many of the families were below the federal poverty level. Twice per month, we provide backpacks for 20 families on Friday after school and they are returned the following Monday to be reused and refilled for the next week. How can you help? Place your food donation in the yellow Bus in the narthex. Last spring we did a survey of the participating backpack families, so we have revised our shopping list a bit. Our new list of backpack food includes: canned chicken, tuna (our most popular protein), pasta, rice, dried beans (please don't buy in bulk!), canned fruit, canned vegetables, and peanut butter. Any foods you donate will be given to those in need. This program is supported by a Bishop's Initiative to Eliminate Hunger grant from the Oregon-Idaho Methodist conference.
