Out of an abundance of caution, we are reaching out to inform you that this evening we have been informed that an 18 month old child who has been at Hillsboro United Methodist Church within the past week has been diagnosed with the viral meningitis strain of Coxsackievirus.
Coxsackievirus most commonly manifests itself as hand, foot and mouth disease in small children. For older children and adults, they may have some flu like symptoms or be completely asymptomatic.
But in very rare cases, in infants and toddlers,
it can be cause viral meningitis, as it has in this case, and it could possibly be in other very young children who have been in the building or exposed to someone else who unknowingly may be a carrier of this strain.
We wanted to share this information with you so you can be aware and on the lookout for any potential symptoms and seek medical care promptly.
